William was my fathers brother and my father always spoke of him as his hero. He was an excellent shot and brought home two reindeer antlers as proof of the reindeer he had shot.There is a family story that some say is true that he took a shot at the family front door key hole and the pellet went through the keyhole . Unfortunately his sister Beatie was looking through the keyhole at the time the pellet hit her in the eye and she lost the sight of that eye permanently. Because of this event William left home and went to sea. He was serving aboard H.M.S. Strongbow On the 17th October 1917 two German cruisers attacked a convoy that the Strongbow was protecting and in the battle the Strongbow was sunk with the loss of all hands. His mother said that at the time William was supposed to have died a mirror cracked in the bathroom.
