James's Story

James initially joined the Army in September 1914 and had 10 months training with the Wiltshire Regiment (13641). He then served with the 6th Battalion of the Leinster Regiment (a part of the 29th Brigade, itself a part of the 10th Irish Division).

He embarked on the Mauretania and sailed from Liverpool on 9th July 1915 landing at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli, on 5th August 1915.

He survived Galipolli being invalided home with an attack of dysentry early in 1916. When recovered he went to France in 1916 where he served in the 2nd Battalion of the Leinster Regiment in the thick of the fighting. It is not known how but James was badly injured on 16th April, and he died of his wounds, in a Red Cross Hospital in France & Flanders, on 17th April 1917.
