John Thomas Ewbank's Story
At the start of WWI he went into the army and was in the trenches at Ypres (Wipers he called it) and also in Mesopotamia (Messpot). He would not say much about his war service except that he carried a precious medical chitty saying that he was excused wearing puttees. In his 70s he was still able to remember a few French phrases which he learned during the war.
