Hugh Phillip's Story

Trooper Robinson was still in training when the Great War broke out, however he left Tidworth early in November 1914 and joined the regiment near Ypres, after barely six months with his regiment at ypres he was injured near Hooge by shrapnel ,several pcs of which hit him in the back, including one piece which passed through one of his lungs and exited his body through his chest, and lying motionless for many hours he was found to be alive and was eventually evacuated to Hospital in Le Havre, several weeks later he was back to Blighty on a hospital ship to Aberdeen Mill Hospital.

After several operations he was told by the medic's that only one sliver of shrapnel remained in his body, but he had had enough and begged them to leave it were it was!!

Due to his poor condition he was discharged from the Army in

July 1916 and although he was able to marry his sweetheart in 1917 his condition never really improved and he was admitted to Whittingham Hospital near Preston on Boxing Day 1926 and,

apart from a few home visits to his son (john) he remained hospitalised until his death in April 1987.

God Bless Him!!
