Thomas's Story
Captain & Quartermaster Thomas Bernard Mahony was awarded the Military Cross in the New Year's Honours list of 1918 and died ten days later, following an accident near Villers-Faucon, at the Red Cross Hospital Rouen, leaving a wife and seven children. He lies at rest in St Sever Cemetery, Rouen and is remembered on the War Memorial at Bray, County Wicklow. Thomas was a career soldier who enlisted in The Royal Irish Regiment in 1892, at the age of 18 and whilst fighting in the Anglo Boer War was mentioned in despatches. During WW1 he was again mentioned in despatches, three times, and his death was noted in the War Diary on 10 January 1918 where testament was given to his 'sterling qualities' and 'popularity'. Obituaries were printed in 'The Wicklow People' and the 'Irish Times' newspapers.
His family speaks his name with pride.
