George's Story

George Walker was my Grandfather (my Mothers Father) and he died in 1960 when I was nine years old. He suffered from Asthma all the time I knew him and was especially bad during the smogs we had in the London area at that time.

I only knew that he was gassed during WW1 and never recovered from the damage that was done.

I only have sketchy memories of him, but remember being very close to him in his last years.

His claim to fame was that he picked up a small girl who wanted to look over a wall. That small girl was Princess Elizabeth, later to become our Queen, Elizabeth II. The wall was in Buckingham Palace where he was carrying out some repair work on the plumbing.
