Samuel's Story
My grandfather died before I was born but my father and uncle have told me about his role in WW1.
He joined the Royal Warwickshires in 1905 aged 16 (he lied about his age!). He served in India for a while, then came back to England where he met and married my grandmother in 1913. He was in the reserves by this time. They had my aunt in May 1914 and in August 1914 he was sent to Ypres. He was shot through the neck, sent to hospital in Rouen, patched up and sent back to The Somme. I think he was a gunner, as my father has a picture of him sitting behind a machine gun. In 1918 he was transferred to the Service Corp as a Motor Driver and was demobbed in 1920. He died aged 65 from luekemia.
