Thomas Austin's Story

My grandfather was shot by a dum dum bullet I think in the battle of Verdun in 1916.He carried a photo of my grandmother in a metal glasses case in his breast pocket. The bullet ricocheted off the case and missed his heart but hit him in the middle of the chest. He was saved by the Salvation Army who recovered his body from the battlefield got him medical treatment and saved his life.He was subsequently discharged on medical grounds in 1917 and my father was born in 1922.
