They had four daughters, Mary (1877-), Maggie (1878-) Isabella (1880-) and Lizzie (1882-). James was a 27 year old Hosiery Manufacturer and Secretary living with his parents at Roachbank, Tollcross, Glasgow when he married 26 year old Mary Cook Burns of 29 Thistle Street, Garnet Hill, Glasgow, on the 20th June 1916. He enlisted in the Royal Scots on the 24th of November 1916 and served in the Machine Gun Corps in France. On the 25th of June 1917 they had a daughter Mary (Maidie) Struthers Cattanach Bain and a son Lynas (Sonny) Bain. In 1926 the family emigrated to South Africa. In 1935 the family was living in Standerton where "James caught a chill and died unexpectedly", leaving his widow and two children.
