Robert's Story
My Great Uncle and whom I was named after in his honour.
Lance Corporal Robert Squince McCulloch.. No. 40907 16th (Service) Battn. Highland Light Infantry.
Robert had been intending to go into his father's decorating business having been educated at Annan Academy and the Edinburgh College of Art. He joined up with the 9/ Royal Scots Regt and served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from Feb. 1915. Robert was wounded at 2nd Ypres in May and was invalided home with a 'Blighty'. He returned to France in July 1916 and was transferred to the 16/ Highland Light Infantry in August. On the Somme, while the Battalion was fighting at Beaumont Hamel, Robert was fatally wounded after a Trench Mortar accident. He was transported back to the St. Johns Ambulance Brigade Hospital at Etaples and died on 21st Feb 1917 aged 22.
Lance Corporal McCulloch is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery.
I was privileged to inherit his Service memorabilia (and his name!) which stirred my interest in both him and the Great War. I am immensely proud of my Great Uncle and of the regiments he served in- with their admirable WW1 Service histories- and completely awed by the experiences, the commitment, the bravery and the sacrifices made by him and every other participant.
