John Roland's Story
A 20-year-old big brother hero who gave his life while doing his duty.
My great-great-uncle Roland died from his wounds on February 1917. Grandma (RolandÂ’s sister) used to mourn her big brother each year on the anniversary of his death. She has now gone so I feel it is up to me to keep alive Roland's memory: that of a 20-year-old big brother hero who gave his life while doing his duty. He is our family hero and rests in peace in France.
Roland joined up in 1914 and was in the Office Training Corps at the Inns of Court before he joined the Northumberland Fusiliers.
He died from his wounds in February 1917 in a field hospital.
