Soldier Record

Our grandfather, Frederick Cooper, enlisted in the Rifle Brigade at the end of 1915. He left behind his wife Annie Maria and three daughters Winifred (Molly), Dorothy (Dolly) and Margaret (Daisy). He served in France right through to 1st November, 1918 when he was killed at Preseau near Valenciennes. He had served over 1000 days, and was killed 10 days before the armistice. Even more sad is the fact that his unit was pulled back after the events of 1st November, and did not see further action. Had he survived that day, he would have survived the war! Our mothers Dolly & Daisy, who were twins, were only three years old when he died. They never knew their father. Frederick is buried at the Preseau Communal Cemetery Extension along with many of his comrades who perished that day. To commemorate the 90th Anniversary of his death, four of his grandchildren Marilyn, Rod, Elaine & Malcolm visited the cemetery and, although we did not know him, we treasure with pride his memory.
