Arthur Charles's Story
L/Cpl Arthur Charles Elkington, 10th Battalion, Duke of Wellington's Regiment, No 13865, was born in Bingley, West Yorkshire. He is buried at Tyne Cot.
He was gassed at Hill 60 on May 1916, wounded on August 1916 and went back to the fighting line in November 1916.
Enlisting at the outbreak of the war, Arthur Charles had been in the fighting line since April 1915. He was gassed at Hill 60 on May 1916, wounded on August 1916 and went back to the fighting line in November 1916. He won the Military Medal in June 1917. He was killed on 19 September 1917 at Ypres. Arthur Charles was looking around a position that his company was to move at night when the enemy started heavy shelling. He took shelter in a dugout that was hit by a shell and he died within a few minutes. In a letter to his family, his officer said that he was a well-respected soldier by his platoon and company. Just one brave man among thousands - one of the Lions.
