Albert's Story

Albert Holt was my maternal grandfather. He was wounded in the arm at Gallipoli and was honourably discharged from the army on 4th April, 1916 from the 10th. Manchester Regiment. I still have his Certificate of Discharge. Being unable to use his left arm from then on, he worked as a night telephone operator for the rest of his working life. On the 12th. May 1950, he was awarded the Imperial Service Medal by King George VI "in recognition of the meritorious sevices which you have rendered."

For the first five years of my life, my mother and I lived with my grandparents until my father was de-mobbed at the end of World War 1 and I remember that I always had to play quietly because my Grandad was sleeping during the day!
