Herbert A's Story
He was eating his dinner on 20 March when an artillery shell landed in his trench, killing him outright.
Herbert was my great uncle, one of five brothers who joined up during 1915-16. A sixth brother, my grandfather, was not accepted due to a weak chest. Herbert was fighting in the trenches just outside a small village called Albert, near the Somme, during March 1916. He was eating his dinner on 20 March when an artillery shell was fired and landed in his trench, killing him and a 21 year old comrade outright. He was 28 and a father of four. But his family was much luckier than most as the other four brothers made it home.
