James's Story
He was badly wounded in the stomach by a shell splinter during the Battle of Cambrai.
James Heathcote was my grandfather. He served in World War I with B Company 38th Battalion of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers as a rifle bomber. He went to France in October 1917 and was subsequently badly wounded in the stomach by a shell splinter during the Battle of Cambrai. He survived his wounds and was discharged in February 1919. He served with the Home Guard during World War II. He later became a quarry worker in the quarries around Buxton and latterly worked in the Ferodo factory at Chapel-en-le-Frith in Derbyshire. He rarely talked about his war experiences.
