William's Story
William died on 11 January 1917 fighting in Mesopotamia.
William was my mother's third-eldest brother. All four of her brothers went off to World War I. My mother was the second youngest of the family of ten; four brothers and six sisters. William died on 11 January 1917 fighting in Mesopotamia and lies buried in Amara War Cemetery (now Iraq). My grandfather had been in the Scots Guards: he tried to join up again and was told he was too old. The youngest of the boys, Thomas, was killed on 2 February 1917. That year my mother's second-eldest sister Helen was killed on 27 December 1917 doing forestry work formerly done by men, so Gran and Grandad lost three of their children in one year.
