Francis's Story
We do not know when Frank enlisted, but he was obviously under-age.
My mother used to mention her brother Francis (Frank) often. She was 11 at the time of his death. Frank borrowed a neighbour's birthlines to enlist in the 11th Battalion Royal Scots under the alias James Ferrie. He was killed on 3 May 1917. My mother gave his age as 17. We do not know when Frank enlisted, but he was obviously under-age. Frank is listed as aged 18 on the Arras Memorial. He is mentioned on Bays 1 and 2: one under the name of James Ferrie, the other, under the name Francis McGrindle, Pte 34844. They couldn't even get his family name right (it was McGindle) - "We will remember them". His mother received 6d a week pension.
