Soldier Record

My Grandad was a soldier in the Great War . I never met him as he died when he was 52 of cancer.This is in remberance of him. He was in the 1st and 6th Seaforth Highlandersand sadly we did not know which battles he fought as like many soldiers he never talked about it . After the war on his return to Scotland he made his way to the Isle of Lewis to join my Granny on December 31st he was not allowed to sail in the King's Yacht HMS Iolaire as he was a soldier and they said that soldiers would make the yacht dirty. Being a soldier was to be his salvation as 181 saliors perished at the entrance to Storoway. Grandad walked over the moors to Carolway stopping only for a cup of tea and dry socks which kind crofters gave him.In the Second World War he joined the navy and twice his ships were sunk . I have his picture above my fireplace wearing his Seaforth Uniform . Grandad we salute you today and thank you so much for all you did for us.You are always in our hearts. Your loving family
