John's Story

John Bone was my Great Uncle. He was a veteran of the Boer War and was then on reserve. Called up at the outbreak of war he went with the 1st Bedfords to France and was killed in the Retreat on 9th November 1914. His family had no news of him for a year and his father travelled to wherever he heard of soldiers who had returned from France to ask if they knew anything of his son. My father, five at the time, could remember his mother's deep distress when the news finally arrived that her brother had been killed.
