William James's Story

In honour of my late maternal grandfather whose passing was deeply felt by myself as a young lad.

My maternal grandfather was in the RNVR Sussex Division(Howe Battalion),he was an ordinary seaman, later, Leading Seaman.

He embarked at Liverpool via Egypt for Gallipoli.

He was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal on 15th September 1915 at Gallipoli.

He rescued a comrade from the enemy trenches whilst under heavy machine gun fire, he was wounded by shrapnel during this action & required hospitalisation.

The medal was presented by his G.O.C on 1st February 1916.

He worked for Eastbourne Gas Company until his death from a burst appendix & Peritonitis in 1953.

He was in the A.R.P squad at the gas works.
