Frederick's Story
The Great Uncle I Never Knew.
Gassed at Ypres - 7th June 1917
Fred was much loved by my Nan who was the only girl with five brothers. William and Frank were too young to join up, but Fred volunteered. Nan often talked about him in great detail, and the awful day the knock at the door came. You didn't need to look who was there - you knew by the knock who it was and what came next. It was the knock that so many families had to endure. As time passed on, my Nan tried to forgive the Germans, but right up to when she died in 1983, no forgiveness came. Fred must have meant so much. They lived in Plaistow, London E13, and I am the last member of our family living in the East End of London.
