William John's Story

Joined up at 18 such was his desire to do his bit. Spent a year in a training battalion and then was sent overseas. Spent 1917 at the front fighting at Arras; Wyschaete; Shrewsbury Forest; Broodseinde and Passchendaele and then went on leave. Course it had to be while on leave that he ended up in hospital! Transferred to the Machine Gun Corps in 1918 he spent the last months of the war advancing around Amiens and was finally discharged in 1919. And then he joined up again in 1938 but that's a different story.
