William's Story
This is a picture of my Grandfather, William Bendall who was killed during the First World War on the 31st July 1917 in the battles of the Ypres Salient. He was aged 30 and was married with three children under the age of four. My Mum Ellen was the eldest of the three children. My mum always told me when I was a little girl that her Dad could have been in the tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey (but so could thousands of other soldiers killed in the First World War).
My mum died many years ago, but a few years ago, someone told me about the Commonwealth Graves War Commission. I looked them up on the web and found their website. I put in my Grandad’s name and to my surprise I found his details.. A couple of years ago, my sisters and I went to visit the Menin Gate Memorial and actually found his name on it. It was very moving for us and I only wished that I could have taken my Mum to see it.
