Richard's Story

My grandad was a slight man who walked with a limp ( shrapnel)who was sent to France in 1916 and came back to England soon after to have the shrapnel removed from his leg (Knee). Once fit he was sent back but this time to Egypt. Where he served exactly I am not sure ( I am trying to find his records) I have been told that many of the records were destroyed in the blitz on London in the second world war.

We should never have done what we did to those boys. They were ill not cowards.

When I was a kid I remember asking grandad what he had done in the war and where he went but the only reply I got from him,(with a tear in his eyes) was " I wont tell you but we should never have done to those young boys what we did." From this over the years I have come to believe he was talking about the firinh squads for young men who were thought to be cowards but were actually suffering from shellshock. I may be wrong but unfortunately now I will never know...
