George's Story
My grandfather, George Jones, went to war in 1914 leaving a wife with two young sons, my uncles William George, who was killed in the World War II and Charles. His wife was pregnant and a little daughter was born in December 1914. He always wanted a daughter but never lived to see her. He was always remembered by my grandmother (his wife) as a gentle, loving husband. The husband of a very good friend of my grandmother's who was called up later said he would bring George home with him, but he, like so many, never returned either. My grandmother was the wife of a missing soldier for nearly two years. His official date of death is 16 June 1915 but he was probably already dead by the time my mother was born at the end of 1914. He is remembered on the Menin Gate at Ypres in Belgium.
