Charles Edward's Story
I am discovering the life of my father just recently, having known few details until recently. He joined up just before he was 19 with a tad of a fib about his age, served in france until he was wounded a 3rd time having deflected a german bayonet from his chest by his hand. He was also gassed early in the war.
His friends and pals were always important to him, he wrote a brief biography in 1920 and it's clear he took great pleasure in organizing pleasure for others. My memory as a child in the 50's is strongest of this same attribute... organizing holidays for friends by word of mouth.
A "lad" to be sure with a happy easy going way. An ordinary fellow, leading an ordinary life with ordinary ideals
