In 1911, Walter aged 16, heard that he could learn a trade in the army. So he joined at the Royal Military school in Exeter, signing
on for three years. At the end of the three years, his family told him that there was no work available. He decided to sign on for three more years. He was now a gunner with the Royal Field Artillery, 6th Battery.
War was now imminent and he was sent to Aldershot in preperation for being sent to France, as part of the British Expeditionary Force.
On Monday 18th August, Walter left England.
Eight day's later, 26th August 1914, Walter was killed in action, aged 19 .
