Sidney's Story

My Grandfather was Pte Sidney Pegg, 24740, 10th & 6th Bn Royal Leicestershire Regiment.

He was married to Mabel E Marlow in 1911 and they had 4 children, Flo, Anne, Sidney Jnr, and Roland.

Roland was my late father and he was born on 8 June 1916.

My Grandfather registered Rolands birth on 13 June 1916 and shortly afterward joined his 10th Bn comrades on the Troop Train passing through Birmingham on their way to France. My Grandmother managed to get to the Station to say her goodbye to her beloved husband.

Little knowing it was to be the last time she would ever see him.

He was destained to be involved in the Battle of The Somme. At some point he was transferred to the 6th Bn, to help them.

He was killed in action 11 August 1916 on the Battle Field by direct hit from 2 enemy Shells, he was just a few weeks away from his 27th Birthday. His 26 year old Wife was left to bring up 4 children under 5, alone. My father was just 64 days old.

My grandmother was so distraught, she would or could not bare to talk about him to any one. Sadly there appears to be no letters or photographs of him and she refused to allow his name to be put on the Leicester Memorial.

However, he is remembered with honour on Panel / Bay 5 of The Arras Memorial, Faubourg D'Amiens Cemetery, Boulevard du General de Gaulle, Arras. France.

He is now re-united with his beloved wife Mabel and their 4 children.

He will forever be lovingly and gratefully remembered for his bravery by the present and future members of his loving family, the majority of whom he never knew, but because he lived, so we live.

God Bless from granddaughter Chris (nee Pegg) Mitchell, and the Family Circle. xxxx
