Harold G's Story
Harold died in the battle of Bourlon Wood on 25 November 1917, famous for being an audacious attempt by the British Army to break through the hindenberg line with tanks. Harold was in the 17th Battalion of the Welsh Regiment which were a bantham regiment in which men were shorter than 5 foot 3.
Harold Glyn Jones overcame prejudice and died in battle for King and Country.
These men were volunteers who fought prejudice within the establishment to be able to fight, and in some cases were treated badly by their own side because of their small size.
The banthams legacy was to be fighters with a point to prove and their stature as soldiers should not be measured by their height but rather their tenacity. My families legacy is the loss of a father and husband and a tough upbringing for my grandfather.
