Thomas (Tom)'s Story
He volunteered at the age of 34 in 1914 although he was married with five children. Luckily for them he did nor serve in the front line and was not injured or killed. His unit was responsible for supplies to the front line using horses and waggons. Even so he saw and was involved in some terrble things. He didn't speak about the war in later years but my mother said that after he came home he used to shut himself in the bedroom and cry. When I started learning French ar school he shared with me the French he remembered learning when he was stationed in France and how the French troops said he had a French name (Collard means cabbage I believe) I remember him with great affection and treasure his service medals found when he died.
My grandfather served with the Army Service Corp from 1914 to 1918
