George Norman's Story

Joined The London Scottish in September 1912 although not 18 until the November. His unit were the first TA unit to fight the Germans at Messines on the 31 October 1914. He was wounded by shrapnel and sent back to the UK. The 1st Battalion of the London Scottish had been fighting Regiments of von Fabecks 26th Division. Promoted to Sgt he returned to France in October 1915 and stayed until being wounded again by shrapnel at Gommecourt Wood on the first day of the battle of the Somme 1st July 1916. He eventually became the Regimental Sergeant Major of the 2nd Battalion of the London Scottish and returned to France after being in Salonika. He stayed in France until September 1919. He finally was discharged from the London Scottish on 14th December 1922.

Letters written by my father to his sister from the trenches in France on scraps of paper. He met and married my mother in 1942. She was in the ATS and he was in the Home guard. They had six children of which I am the eldest and am still busy researching his service.
