Ernest Alfred's Story
My Great Grandfather, Ernest Alfred Franklin enlisted and joined 1st Bn, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) in 1916. His youngest daughter apparently used to say that he was considered a bit too old at aged 40 to volunteer, but enlisted because he was a crack rifleman and so good with catapults and guns. He was killed in action on 23rd April 1917 during the Battle of Arras aged 40 and left a wife and three daughters.
