George's Story

An upright man in stature and morals.

My Grandfather was a regular solder in the Grenadier Guards who was posted to France in 1918 when my father was just a few months old. He was wounded in the first battle of Ypres and at one time was reported as missing believed killed in action. Harold MacMillan was at one time his Platoon Commander. He often told me that he went over the top 5 times and on the 6th time he was wounded. He was eventually dischard because of war wounds in 1917. He lived to the grand old age of 101. Two of his brothers were killed in WW1, one from the Grenadier Guards and one from the Coldstream Guards.
