Ernest's Story
My grandfather, Sgt. Ernest Joyce, aged 38, of the 1st Battalion the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, was killed in action on the 29th September 1918. The Cornwalls were attacking enemy positions in the area around Cambrai. He was born in Sawtry, Cambs, and had moved the Nuneaton, Warwicks. He had been in the Army for 13 years and went through the Boer War campaign. He was well known in Nuneaton, being employed by the Midland Railway and also in the local Salvation Army where he was the leader of the Sunday School.
