Jabez's Story
Jabez Perry, born Normanton 1893 married Gertrude Neal 1913. In the same quarter they had a son Albert.Jabez worked in the coal mines and joined up in response to Lord Kitchener's request I imagine with hundreds more from the pits. Jabez died 24/7/1916. and is buried near Arras. He was in the 6th Battalion KOYLI. He was my Uncle and it is poignant that he died in 1916. His mother died in 1917 and his wife Gertrude died in 1918 leaving young Albert an orphan at 5 years of age. I have not been able to find out what happened to Albert. Jabez's next of kin was given as Catherine Neal his mother in law from Queen Street Goldthorpe and the house is still there. His father Alfred my grandfather, also served the whole of the war as I have his 2 medals 1914-15 and 1914-8. Alfred's wife died in 1917 from the usual complaints of that time, asthma and bronchitis. There was an inquest in which the coroner stated that her death was accelerated by the neglect of her husband who was a Sapper in the RE 1914-1918 .Now I don't know what to think. Very sad.
