Charles Ernest's Story

Born at Ashwell, Rutland, on April 1, 1895, he was employed as a gardener as a teenager. He joined the 9th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment on September 17, 1914, and received the number 15343. He went out to France on July 29, 1915, but he was reported missing presumed killed at Mametz Wood, near Albert, France (Battle of the Somme), on July 14, 1916. He has no known grave, but is commemorated by name only on the Thiepval Memorial. he was unmarried. Another kinsman - not forgotten
