John's Story

Jack was the eldest of 4 stepsiblings of my mother. He died aged 19 at Delville Wood on the Somme on 10 September 1916. His brothers and his sister, my Auntie Gertie, never forgot him. Auntie said that my son resembles him. I have a locket which my Auntie gave me, it carries Jack's portaits, one as a litle boy aged 3 and one in army uniform.

This year my son took his children (9and 7) to Delville Wood Cemetery at Longueval to visit Jack's grave.

Jack, your memory lives on in the family; I wish I could have known you.
