George's Story

"The call was not in vain, And on England's roll of honour, you will find his name"

George was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Holgate of 15 Oxford Street, York. George was in the 1st/5th battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment. George was killed in action aged 29 in the battle of Ypres on the 9th October 1917. The fortunes of war denied George a known and honoured burial and his name is amongst those of 35000 of his comrades on the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 125 to 128. He was survived by his brothers Fred and Harry who served in France and by his sisters Edna and Annie. His brother Harry named his son George after his brother who made the supreme sacrifice.
