Harry was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Holgate of 15 Oxford Street, York. Harry enlisted on 31st August 1914 and was demobilized on 12th July 1919. He served in The Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery in France. He served with his brothers Fred and George. George was in the 1st/5th battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment. George was killed in action aged 29 in the battle of Ypres on the 9th October 1917. The fortunes of war denied George a known and honoured burial and his name is amongst those of 35000 of his comrades on the Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 125 to 128.
