George Young's Story
Killed in action on the 13th November 1916 at the Battle of Ancre while serving with the 1/7 Black Watch. He was with a carrying party bringing supplies to the newly taken ground in difficult muddy conditions. He was survived by his wife, Mary and three children, Joan, Elizabeth and John. In a letter sent to Mary on 29th December1916, Capt John Hunter says 'I am writing now to tell you he is buried at a spot near the German lines. He had moved so far to the left that he went beyond our sector and was buried by another chaplain.' His grave is in Y-Ravine Cemetary, Sp Mem D8.This has been visited by his daughter, Joan and his grandson, Ken Kennedy.
He sent a postcard to his eldest daughter 'I hope your wee brother is getting on alright. Good night'
