Richard (Dick)'s Story

My Grandad only once mentioned what had happened to him during the war. I asked him what he had done to celebrate his 18th birthday and he told me he was working in a mine in a prisoner of war camp after being captured during the battle of the Somme. Like many young men he had lied about his age and had joined up when he was 17. He had his appendix taken out whilst he was a prisoner with no anasthetic. He was a very gentle man who loved his family.
