Joshua's Story

He always said that he was one of the lucky ones.

My grandad told me how he was taken prisoner while in action on the Somme, He was trained as a bomber and used to take part in night raids on trenches. He took the King's Shilling in August 1914, and took part in the battles of Neuve Chapelle, Arras and the Somme as well as other important engagements. He was taken prisoner when he was blown into a shell hole; he was wounded and knocked out. When he woke up he could not move forward nor back to his line as the fighting was so intense. He was taken prisoner later that day. He got back to the UK in 1919. He always said that he was one of the lucky ones.
