John Alfred's Story
John Alfred was my great grandfather. Just after the picture was taken, when he was home to recover from injury or illness, he went back to the front just outside Ypres and was killed on 21st November 1917. The baby in the photograph, my grandfather, never knew his father and his wife never remarried and died in 1968. I was priviledged to visit my great grandfathers grave at Cement House Cemetery, Belguim, the first blood relative to have done so since he was buried there. Buried next to him were 3 other soldiers from the same regiment and it is thought there was a bombardment and they were killed together. My Grandfather was a Royal Engineer and seconded to the Lancashire Fusiliers. The other soldiers buried with him are T E JIinks, R Hall, and G Waldron.
