Charles's Story

Charles Hutchin joined the Territorials in April 1914 at the age of 16. He thought he would get a fortnights holiday! The sergeant major at the recruiting centre when Charles gave his age told him to walk outside and then return and give his age as 17, he would then sign him on. The camp was at Ashridge park Berkhamsted where they were a week before the war was declared, so Charles was in for the duration, being demobbed in April 1919. He commented in later years "I never want another holiday like that". He was a grand old man who will not be forgotten.
