Arthur Edward's Story
Corporal A E BRADFORD - BARKSTON.
Mr & Mrs J Bradford of Barkston have received the sad news that their eldest son Corporal Arthur E Bradford was killed in action in France on August 19th. He was aged 21. In a letter to the parents a friend of the deceased said he was killed instantly by a shell and is much mourned both by officers and men. He was loved and respected by all for his devotion and bravery in the field. The writer added: "he was my pal we came out together on Easter Day from Ireland, and I can only speak from my own experience, we have lost a good fellow in your son. Please accept the deepest sympathy from all the officers and men in his platoon.

Arthur joined the Lincolnshire Regiment in 1915 and was wounded in action in 1916. After a long recuperation he was transferred to the N Staffordshire Regiment and spent time in Ireland where he met and became engaged to a young lady called Lily Lynch. After being posted back to France in early 1918 he died never seeing Lily again.
