Edgar's Story

Enlisted into South Staffs Regiment then seconded into 173rd Tunnelling Corps K.I.A. 23rd May 1916. Married with three children. Buried in Niouex-les-Mines Communal Cemetry Loos Battlefield.

My Mother, Florence May (nee Goodall ), never forgot her Dad although she was only 7 years of age when he was killed. She never got to see his grave only knowing he was buried somewhere in France. Upon her death in 1990 it was found in her papers that she wished to have her ashes spread upon her Dad's grave, if possible. With the help of The Birmingham War Research Society, run by Alec & Ian, we located his burial place. The BWRS took us across to the First World War battle fields on one of their trips and we fulfilled Mom's wishes. It was a trip filled with all emotions, sadness at seeing so many graves but ultimately a feeling of love that Grandad was re-united with some of his family especially his Daughter, my Mom. We have been across on further trips and always pleasure in the way all the graves are so beautifully cared for.

The Grandad I never saw.
