Arthur Francis's Story
Grampa was one of that unlucky generation who experienced both WW1 and WW2 - the first as a soldier in the Civil Service Rifles from 1915 to 1918, and the second firewatching during the London Blitz.
I saw enough of abroad during the war
His was a reserve batallion - maybe one of the reasons he survived with no more than dysentry and a duodenal ulcer. They were sent in as replacements after the big offensives. He started his war in France and ended it in France, with Palestine and Greece in between.
His stories were always funny ones - about the camels who spat, the lice which ate the Keating's Powder and the mess tin on rabbit stew that went all over him when a shell hit and stayed there for the two days he was pinned down in an observation trench. But he'd never go abroad again saying "I saw enough of abroad during the war".
