William's Story

William McMillan was a steam locomotive driver who worked out of Glasgow and Edinburgh driving steam trains. He drove trains in Northern France during WWI, probably transporting goods and troops. He was in the Royal Engineers, he transferred to the Camerons and then back to the Royal Engineers. After the war he remained a train driver until he retired. He lived to the age of 89. He had 5 children and 6 grandchildren. In 1930/31 he was involved with the George Bennie Railplane project in Milngavie. One of the trains he drove is in the Glasgow Transport Museum, the Caledonian No.123, this was famous for the record-breaking speed of the time of 56 mph between Edinburgh and Carlisle, this was called the West Coast Line.
