Thomas's Story
Thomas was employed by the North Eastern Railway Company and joined the Battalion created by them, the 17th Northumberland Fusiliers. They served as a Pioneer Battalion and Pioneer Railway Battalion, building and maintaining railways for the transportation of arms, provisions and men. They often worked under heavy fire and the work they did was destroyed fairly soon after completion. Thomas was killed during the heavy bombardment of the Third battle of Ypres, probably by shell fire.
He wrote 'From Daddy to my little sweetheart' on a card sent five days before he was killed.
